One Room Has No Power but the Rest of the Home Works

How to check a single-room power loss safely and what electricians commonly find when lights or sockets fail on one circuit.

Safety first

These checks involve normal switches and unplugging only. Never remove a DB cover, socket, switch or light fitting. If there is smoke, fire, active sparking or anyone receives a shock, keep clear and call SCDF at 995 for an emergency.

A partial blackout is different from a whole-home trip. If one bedroom, part of the kitchen or only the sockets have stopped working, a branch circuit may be off while the main supply remains healthy. The pattern of what still works gives us the fastest diagnostic clue.

  • Lights work but wall sockets do not, or the reverse.
  • Only one room or one group of points is affected.
  • The DB main switch remains on.

Safe checks before calling an electrician

    Look at the DB without removing its cover and note any breaker sitting lower than the others.

    Reset that breaker once after switching off the affected points.

One-reset rule

A protective breaker may be reset once after appliances and switches are turned off. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated resets can re-energise a real fault.

What we commonly find on this type of call-out

  • A branch MCB tripped because of overload or a faulty device.
  • A loose connection interrupted downstream points.
  • A damaged switch, socket or lighting driver opened the circuit.

Symptoms help narrow the search, but they do not prove the cause. Electricians use suitable test instruments and safe-isolation procedures to separate an appliance fault from a fixed-wiring or protection fault.

  • Trace the circuit and test supply at accessible points.
  • Locate a loose, burnt or failed connection.
  • Repair the defective point and confirm all downstream outlets operate safely.

  • A socket is warm, scorched or smells burnt.

  • The DB has no clear labels and you cannot identify the circuit.

  • Avoid combining multiple high-load devices on one circuit.
  • Replace loose or cracked accessories promptly.
  • Label circuits after professional testing.
