Burning Smell From a Socket: What to Do Immediately

Safe first actions when a power point smells burnt, crackles or shows heat damage, plus the common faults found behind the faceplate.

These checks involve normal switches and unplugging only. Never remove a DB cover, socket, switch or light fitting. If there is smoke, fire, active sparking or anyone receives a shock, keep clear and call SCDF at 995 for an emergency.

A burnt-plastic or fishy electrical smell is not a normal “old socket” issue. It can mean a loose terminal is creating heat, an accessory is overloaded or insulation has begun to break down. These call-outs should be treated as urgent even if the socket still supplies power.

  • Burnt smell, buzzing or crackling near one power point.
  • Brown marks, soft plastic or a plug that is unusually hot.
  • Lights flicker when a connected appliance starts.

Safe checks before calling an electrician

One-reset rule

A protective breaker may be reset once after appliances and switches are turned off. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated resets can re-energise a real fault.
