Circuit Breaker Will Not Stay On: Reset Once, Then Stop

Why an MCB or RCCB may refuse to stay on, the safe isolation sequence to try once, and when repeated resetting becomes dangerous.

Safety first

These checks involve normal switches and unplugging only. Never remove a DB cover, socket, switch or light fitting. If there is smoke, fire, active sparking or anyone receives a shock, keep clear and call SCDF at 995 for an emergency.

When a breaker drops the moment it is switched on, it is doing an important job. Repeatedly forcing it up can energise a damaged circuit again and again. Our first task on these call-outs is to establish whether the fault follows an appliance, one final circuit or the protective device itself.

What you may notice

  • One labelled circuit breaker immediately returns to OFF.
  • The main RCCB trips when a particular breaker is raised.
  • The problem remains after obvious appliances are unplugged.

Safe checks before calling an electrician

    Turn off and unplug appliances connected to the affected rooms.

    Push the tripped breaker fully down before attempting one reset.

    If the DB labels are clear, leave the suspected circuit off while keeping unaffected circuits on.

One-reset rule

A protective breaker may be reset once after appliances and switches are turned off. If it trips again, leave it off. Repeated resets can re-energise a real fault.

  • A short circuit at a socket, light or concealed cable.
  • Earth leakage from an appliance or fixed electrical point.
  • A weakened breaker or heat-damaged terminal in the DB.

Symptoms help narrow the search, but they do not prove the cause. Electricians use suitable test instruments and safe-isolation procedures to separate an appliance fault from a fixed-wiring or protection fault.

  • Measure the affected circuit rather than guessing from the breaker position.
  • Inspect terminations and protective devices with the supply safely isolated.
  • Repair the fault, then test the circuit before restoring it.

Stop troubleshooting and call promptly when

  • The DB box feels hot or makes buzzing sounds.
  • You see discolouration, melted plastic or soot.
  • The breaker will not latch after one attempt.
  • The trip affects the whole home repeatedly.

How to reduce the chance of recurrence

  • Do not use a higher-rated breaker as a shortcut.
  • Keep the DB accessible and labels readable.
  • Have recurring nuisance trips investigated before they worsen.
